Happy Pączki Day!! 🥮

BloggerImage

Yesterday I went to my favorite Polish deli (Celina's in Lemont!) and picked up two dozen Pączkis. I dropped some off at my parent's house (my dad was thrilled!) before taking the rest home. I split the remainder, taking the other half to the Donelson's house tonight when Mike and I went to visit! Laura was super excited to try one (she had never tasted a Pączki before) and was even more happy to see that I had also brought her some kolaczkis! She always tells me whenever I go to family parties on my dad's side that I have to bring her some back, so I made sure to bring her a full box this time. :)

February 27th, 2017

Sometimes I absolutely adore working at a hospital in an Ob/Gyne office. I love the patients. I love seeing all the happy mommy's-to-be. I love all my co-workers. I love seeing all the cute little babies. I love sitting in on ultrasounds and seeing the little miracles up close. I just love so much about my job!

But then there are days like today. Days where they make me go down to the ER to drop something off...and I have to walk through wound care and the burn ward to get there. Days where I have to go downstairs to the basement and sort through literally hundreds of patient files to find that one folder we need. Days where our usually peppy mommy's are very grumpy and hormonal. Days like today...when someone actually dies right outside our office.

To clarify... Mondays are our short days—we all leave the office at about 3PM. Our patients were done for the day around 1PM, so after that we went about our usual tasks and routines. Around 230PM or so, one of our nurses walked outside the office to go put blood tests into the pick up lockbox out front. Suddenly she came rushing back in, white-faced, and announced, "There's a dead man outside!" Now most of thought she was just being silly or over exaggerating. But sure enough when we peeked out the door there was a little old man sitting in one of the lobby waiting chairs, slumped over dead.

We were all aghast. When did this happen?? And how?? There was a doctor from one of the other offices checking the old man. After a bit of examination he declared what we already knew: the little man was dead. And even worse? The man had rigor mortis. That means that his limbs had started to stiffen, making them very difficult to move out of their locked positions. Rigor mortis only happens at least two hours after someone dies. I was mortified. Seriously. That man had been sitting there dead for over two hours. Why hadn't anyone done anything?! Why hadn't anyone said something?! The man looked dead—there was no mistaking it. He also was wearing pajamas and no shoes. Clearly he looked lost and out of place! And yet not one person spoke up until now.

Eventually security and the paramedics showed up and took over. It was so sad. I was definitely pretty shook up when it was time to head home. It's days like these that I find myself asking, "Why do I work here?" I hate blood. I don't do well in hospitals. And yet...I work in one??? Sometimes it seems to silly to mention to people that I actually get really grossed out by hospitals. But. Despite the bad days, despite crazy things like this, despite the whole hospital thing in general...I really do love it. Like I said, I love the patients. My co-workers. The mommys and babies. I love everything about my office. So I have to put up with these fleeting crazy moments. Because truly, it is all worth it in the end. :)

Today Mike and I went out with Charlotte to Chilli's for lunch. We hadn't seen her since before our trip, so we wanted to get together to catch up on things. As usual, it was a lovely time. :) After lunch, we headed back to the Donelson's to see if anyone else from the family was home. At first it was only Laura, but then Mike Sr and Chris showed up with Peter! That little cutie grinned at me all big when he saw me and cried out excitedly before running in to say hi. I was super excited to see him (of course), but even more-so today because Michael and I had gotten him something special while we were in Disney! I went out to my car and got him his gifts.

Grandma June had given him a cute little stuffed rabbit that came with a book. He had fun bopping the rabbit over and flipping through the pages. :) But Michael and I got him the best present of all: a Buzz Lightyear hoodie! As I'm sure most of you know, Peter is obsessed with Toy Story. Especially Buzz. He lit up instantly when he saw it and yelled, "Buzz!" However... he wouldn't put it on. :( He was all crabby because he was due for his afternoon nap, so he was being a bit fussy. Oh well. Hopefully he'll put it on real soon!

Apartment Update: Our other chairs came today! Now we have a full set of four around our dining table. They look so great together! I love that we went with a counter-height table.

So I'd say our place is about 92% finished. The kitchen and bathroom are completely together. The living room has one or two things in the corner that still need to find a home. The bedroom dresser is a bit cluttered with nicknacks, and there is still a pile in the one corner that needs to be sorted through. We are so close to being done and I love it already! Everything looks so wonderful and our place just has such a lovely, homey feel to it. :)

I know this isn't the best "photo of the day", but I'm a little amazed by it so you all just have to deal, lol. I discovered this on my right ankle today...and I have no idea how it got there! I don't remember getting it, I don't remember it hurting, and I have no clue how it could've cut in such an odd, distinct shape like that! Completely baffles me. Maybe I was probed by aliens in my sleep and they like inserted a chip or something in my leg. 😂

We spent our first night in the apartment last night! We started the day off making breakfast in our new kitchen! Mike made me some delicious scrambled eggs! After we got ready for the day, we got right back to work. Mike built our entertainment center and mounted the TV...it looks so good! I am seriously loving getting the place together!

We also bought our kitchen table! Plus two chairs (only one pictured)! We assembled the bed and Mike also built the new dresser. Oh! And the floor is finally (mostly) clear of boxes! :D

Disney Vacation: Day 11 (Visiting June 👵🏻 / Traveling ✈️)

BloggerImage

Today was the last day of our trip so naturally we woke up sad to be heading back to reality. We packed our things and checked out of our hotel before heading out in the rental car. Our flight wasn't until the evening, so we decided to spend our time before the flight visiting with Grandma June at her home. We made the drive down and arrived just in time for the yummy lunch she had prepared! The day wasn't anything extravagant (especially compared to our previous days at the parks!) but it was still lovely. We had a nice time just relaxing and talking with June (and playing with her cute puppy, Charla!). Before we left, she made sure we left with some goodies. :) We made it to the airport where we checked in the rental car and got through all the security and bag check stations with ease. We were lucky enough to have no one else in our row on the flight back, so it was very roomy! My dad graciously picked us up from the airport and we made it back to our home before twelve. We were definitely tired from all the traveling! And, despite being sad to have had to say goodbye to sunny Florida and all the Disney magic, we were happy to be home in our cozy bed. :)
